Sila Manidargal - A blog to recognize, identify some of the great legends who remarkably changed the society.
Today in Sila Manidargal, we will see about Mr. Khan Sahib who was a brave and a ferocious warrior. He was born in Panaiyur in a Hindu family. He married a Christian girl and followed Islam.
Due to caste based murders in his local area, he escaped to Pondicherry. Later he moved to Tanjore and joined British forces as "Sepoy" (In earlier days, Sepoy was considered as least military force)
He swiftly learnt different languages, and military defense. Due to his ability and military intelligence, he was promoted as Commandant of East India Company's Sepoys.
He was asked to move to Nellore and work under Mohammed Kamal. A few days later he was asked to work for Chanda Sahib as TAX Collector. In 1750s, Chanda Sahib was the ruler of Madurai and Khan Sahib was appointed as one of the TAX collector of Madurai and Tirunelveli.
Khan Sahib and Chanda Sahib both together suppressed the riots that took place in Madurai against British rule. As soon as Madurai became calm, the East India company ordered Khan Sahib to exit Madurai. This order agitated Khan. But Khan Sahib left Madurai obeying his ruler Chanda Sahib.
After Khan left Madurai, communal riots, lutes, Hyder Ali's destruction against Madurai temples took place back to back. The company again ordered Khan Sahib to go back to Madurai and solve the problems. He again took control of Madurai along with his bravery soldiers. His military tactics gave him a success.
He was the one who gave back the lands looted by Hyder Ali to Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple. He was the one who saved old records and natural resources in and around Madurai.
As the situation came under control, the East India company ordered Khan Sahib to exit Madurai. But Khan did not obey the order. Indeed, he started taking control of Madurai and Tirunelveli and he started to renovate the temples which were earlier destroyed by the British and Hyder Ali.
Tamil Nadu's Emblem "the Srivilliputhur temple" still represent the great work done by the Brave warrior. French Governor (who was against the British) later said, Khan Sahib military strategy was a nightmare for them and he declared no one can defeat them.
Like every other big Tamil Warrior, he was also killed by British using bribes and sabotage. Three of Khan Sahib associates were bribed to capture. They surrounded Khan Sahib fort and after a big fight British Captured him and hanged him.
The Khan was known by different names (Khan Sahib, Muhammed Yusuf Khan, Nellore Subedar). But his Original name was MARUTHANAYAGAM Pillai.
