"Ravi de partager avec vous cet article sur la ville de l'aube"
Yes, many of you rightly guessed it. Pat on your back and join me to explore the elegant City of Dawn (The Auroville).
History
Mirra Alfassa was a spiritual collaborator of Sri Aurobindo and co-founder of "Sri Aurobindo Ashram - Pondicherry". She reached India in 1920 and settled in Pondicherry. Mirra Alfassa became a Yogi in the late 1950s.
She was constantly having a dream, about a place on earth where no body or no nation could claim it as its sole property. She wanted it for every human and humanity with no distinction. Mirra became Mother for all her followers. She was 90 years old when she started building a Universal Town (Auroville) near Viluppuram district - Tamilnadu.
Architect Roger Anger gave life to Mother's dream of building a town for atleast 50000 people. The city was inaugurated and named as "Auroville" (Aurore means dawn & ville means city) on February 28, 1968. More than 5000 Citizens from 124 Countries participated in the inaugural of a township where humanity is more important than anything else.
Speciality
On the day of inaugural representatives from 124 nations and 23 states of India visited Auroville and placed a handful of soil on the exact center point of the town as a symbolic gesture of human unity.
Auroville Symbol
• Dot in the centre represents the Unity
• The Inner circle in the symbol represents the creation
• The Petals outside the circle represents the expression
Auroville Charter
The first version of Charter was drafted by Mother herself in French. It had 4 key points.
• Auroville - belongs to none
• Auroville - the place for unending Education
• Auroville - a place for Self-realization
• Auroville - a place for Unity
Conflicts
The Mother passed away during 1973. After her demise, there were few conflicts between the Ashram and residents of Auroville. In 1980 & 1988 the Government of India passed two acts to solve the conflict. ("The Auroville Emergency Provision & Foundation Act")
Recognition
Auroville is recognised as the first and only internationally endorsed ongoing experiment in human unity and transformation of consciousness, also concerned with – and practically researching into – sustainable living and the future cultural, environmental, social and spiritual needs of mankind.
Although many of us do not know the reason behind Auroville, today Auroville stands out as one of the vital and the busiest tourist attractions. I couldn't visit inside the golden ball (MatriMandir), but I am happy that I have explored a bit of the city of dawn.
